About Us

About Sun Peaks Alpine Club (SPAC)

We’ve been around for more than 60 years!

Our club formed in 1962 under the name “Kamloops Ski Team”. Since then, we have undergone several name changes: The “Tod Mountain Ski Team”, the “Kamloops Alpine Club”, and finally, when the mountain officially changed their name to Sun Peaks Resort in 1992, we became the “Sun Peaks Alpine Club”.

Kamloops has a wealth of ski racing knowledge and former members and alumni can be found everywhere. The former club cabin was recently renovated into the now called the Sun Peaks Hostel, on your right as you drive by the Burfield Lodge.

The Sun Peaks Alpine Club Cabin, located on the hill, is our home base now.

The Clubhouse

The SPAC clubhouse is located on the west end of the main parking lot P2, beside the Sun Peaks Health Centre.

The clubhouse serves as a meeting place for all racers and their coaches. There is a kitchen equipped with microwaves and a fridge for lunch use.

The clubhouse is open on weekends from 8:30am – 4:00pm. Midweek days and times will vary.

Use of the clubhouse is restricted to Sun Peaks Alpine Club members.

Lockers are available in the basement for all FIS/U16/U14 athletes. If there are extra lockers, they can be assigned to other athletes and/or club members, at the discretion of the program director.

The Nancy Green Ski League (NGSL)

The Nancy Greene Ski League – sponsored by Rio Tinto in B.C. – is a national program, inaugurated shortly after Nancy Greene Raine’s gold medal win at the 1968 Grenoble Olympic Winter Games. Since then, the program has been successful in introducing thousands of children to alpine skiing. Many of Canada’s top international skiers received their early training in Nancy Greene Ski League programs.

The program introduces children to basic ski techniques and skills, basic safety rules, and teamwork. Enjoyment of the sport and the mountain environment is also emphasized. The program is aligned with the Gliding Start, Skier Essentials and Learn to Train phases of the Long Term Skier Development Model (AIM 2 Win), and the Snow Stars Skill Achievements Program. Focus is put on developing skills to ski on all terrain, in all conditions and most of all, have fun on skis!

The Nancy Greene Ski League also introduces children to competition. These events, held at the club, zone, and provincial level, provide young skiers the opportunity to test the skills they have learned in the program in a fun and friendly environment. The emphasis in competition is placed on individual progress, team results, camaraderie, and fair play.

Developing Skills For Life: Children who are physically educated feel confident. They are encouraged to build confidence and skills through competitive and recreational sport activity. They will enjoy overall health benefits by developing greater physical literacy, which encourages them to be more physically active throughout their lives. Skiing is a life-long sport that is practiced by people of every age, shape, size, ethnicity and level of ability, but skiing skills are not the only benefits of ski racing program.

In addition, the children will learn: Ski safely, Cooperation, Independence, Listening Skills, Self-confidence, Goal Setting, Group/Peer Learning, Task-focused Activities. Skill levels include Gliding Start, Skier Essentials, Learn to Train.

Volunteering
At the Nancy Greene Ski Level, there is no formal volunteer requirement. However, we do rely on volunteers to run events and races, and it’s a fantastic way to be involved and to meet other families! Plus you’ll have so much fun that you’ll forget that you’re volunteering! Volunteering can take many different forms; A shift in the clubhouse as club parent (a great option if you have younger children), hot dog days, races (both on-hill or off-hill positions), fundraisers, being a board member, etc. If you have any questions about volunteering, feel free to ask your NGSL parent rep.
